From South Korea To California: Learning English And Interning Abroad

Seungyeon, or Angela in the U.S., immerses herself in diverse cultures and scenic beauty in San Diego, enhancing her English skills through CEL's structured courses and now excelling as a marketing intern, integrating her design background for career growth.

Hello! My name is Seungyeon, but here in America my name is Angela. I’m from South Korea and I was a university student majoring in visual design. I also worked as a graphic designer.

When I decided to come to the United States, my goal was to immerse myself in diverse cultures and environments. San Diego immediately caught my attention given its reputation for being a melting pot of cultures, and for its great location. With easy access to major cities such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Tijuana in Mexico, I knew I could explore beyond San Diego and meet people from all over the world. In addition to its convenient location, San Diego boasts a picturesque climate and stunning scenery. One of my favorite pastimes is watching the sunset from La Jolla beach, which always takes my breath away. Moreover, San Diego has a wealth of famous tourist attractions, including the San Diego Zoo, Coronado Island, and a vibrant nightlife scene in the Gaslamp Quarter. Since arriving in this lovely city, I have had many new experiences that I never thought possible.

I had the pleasure of being a student in my teacher Lydia's class for two months and I found the level of difficulty to be just right. One of the great things about the course was that it was subdivided into different areas of study, such as English speaking, listening, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. This helped me to focus on specific skills and make steady progress. Additionally, the teachers provided us with excellent educational materials, such as news articles and radio channels, which I found very useful for self-study outside of class.

My favorite class was the business conversation class because I was able to engage in discussions about current events from around the world with my classmates and learn about American corporate culture, including tips for job interviews and how to write business emails. Through this class and the CEL program, I have improved my English listening and speaking skills significantly. Now, I can confidently enjoy my life in the United States without hesitation!

In my free time, I like to explore the bars and nightlife in Downtown. It is thrilling to meet new foreign friends and converse with them in another language.

Since graduating from CEL I have been working as a marketing intern at CEL San Diego and I have enjoyed the position. My tasks involve designing web pages, social media posts, and printed materials, which are all related to my major and previous work experiences. As a result, I have quickly adapted to my new workplace and feel confident in my abilities.

Having an internship at CEL is a big chance for me to further develop my professional career and improve my English skills. I am excited to learn new things and gain inspiration from this new workplace.
