From Germany To California! Meet Lisa, Our Santa Monica Intern.

Lisa Fritsche, a German intern at CEL in LA, enjoys beachside work, assisting students, and exploring the West Coast before returning to Germany.

From Germany To California! Meet Lisa, Our Santa Monica Intern.

Hi there, my name is Lisa Fritsche. I’m from Germany and I came to Los Angeles in February 2023 where I will be studying English and also, interning at CEL.

I decided to go to Santa Monica because I always wanted to live and work close to the beach and in a big city at the same time. I have been to the East Coast a couple of times before which is why I wanted to experience living on the West Coast.

CEL Los Angeles Santa Monica is the best place to learn English and work in my opinion because it offers me the opportunity to explore Los Angeles and cities close to LA after I finish work. I will be staying at CEL until August but I would like to stay a little longer in order to travel around the West Coast.

My main responsibilities as a CEL intern are assisting Jasmine, who is the Student Services coordinator. I help her to prepare orientation documents for new students and organize level-up tests for students who want to go to a higher-level class. I also print and distribute curriculums, grades, and attendance sheets to teachers.  I’m really enjoying working at an American company because it is fun to speak English at work. I also like meeting people from different countries, which happens at CEL every day.  I will have improved my English a lot by the time I go back to Germany, which is useful for university.

I have a lot of spots that I like in Los Angeles, but my favorite place so far is "The Playground" which is a famous dance studio on Melrose Ave in West Hollywood. I also enjoy going to Santa Monica Beach and Ocean Park as often as possible.

I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to live and work in LA for such a long time. I already met so many amazing people from all over the world.

Enjoying the beach in California

What is it like to intern in Santa Monica while learning English?

Lisa Fritsche, a student from Germany, chose Santa Monica, California, for her English language studies and internship with CEL (College of English Language) starting in February 2023. She wanted to live and work near the beach while experiencing a large city on the West Coast, having previously visited the East Coast. Lisa found the CEL Los Angeles Santa Monica campus ideal for combining language learning with exploring the wider Los Angeles area after work. Her initial stay at CEL was planned until August, with aspirations to extend it for more West Coast travel. This unique combination of academic and practical experience allows students to immerse themselves in an American work environment while significantly improving their language skills.

What responsibilities does a CEL intern have in Los Angeles?

As a CEL intern in Los Angeles, Lisa plays a vital role in student services. She assists the Student Services coordinator by preparing essential orientation documents for new students, ensuring they have a smooth start to their studies. Furthermore, she organizes level-up tests for students aiming to advance to higher-level classes, which helps maintain academic progression. Lisa also manages the distribution of curriculums, grades, and attendance sheets to teachers. She genuinely enjoys working in an American company, valuing the daily opportunity to speak English and interact with students from diverse international backgrounds, enriching her cultural understanding and linguistic fluency.

The internship program at CEL offers a practical complement to formal English classes, helping students connect classroom learning with real-world application. Lisa expects her time here to greatly improve her English, providing a strong foundation for her future university studies in Germany. Beyond her professional duties, Lisa enjoys exploring Los Angeles; her favorite spots include "The Playground" dance studio on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood, along with the scenic Santa Monica Beach and Ocean Park. She expresses deep gratitude for the opportunity to live and work in Los Angeles, highlighting the many connections she has made with people from across the globe. How can an internship enhance your English learning experience?

An internship, particularly one in a vibrant city like Los Angeles, significantly enhances the English learning experience by providing consistent exposure to the language in professional and social contexts. For many students, this practical application solidifies grammar, expands vocabulary, and refines conversational skills far beyond what classroom settings alone can offer. Daily interactions with colleagues and clients, preparing documents, and participating in meetings all contribute to a more authentic and rapid language acquisition process. The opportunity to work in an American company offers invaluable insights into business communication and cultural nuances.

Beyond language development, an internship can also build confidence, a key factor in achieving fluency. When students like Lisa are regularly challenged to communicate effectively, their ability to express themselves grows exponentially. Moreover, an internship provides a unique chance to build an international network, meeting people from various backgrounds and engaging in diverse conversations. This immersion helps students overcome common difficulties learning English and supports the development of crucial business English phrases for global careers.
